Agromedicine – The Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Jember (FK UNEJ), continues to expand its educational programs for undergraduate students, one of which involves exploring collaboration with Kaliwates General Hospital (RSU) Jember. This exploratory activity took place on September 18, 2024, with the main focus on health promotion practices in the PTP plantation area in Jember. The collaboration is expected to benefit FK UNEJ students while supporting efforts to improve public health in the region.
In this meeting, FK UNEJ was represented by the faculty leadership, the Cooperation Commission, the Medical Education Unit, and several senior lecturers who support this initiative. They were warmly welcomed by the leadership of RSU Kaliwates Jember, who enthusiastically received the collaboration proposal. Dr. Haryanto, Director of RSU Kaliwates, expressed his readiness to support FK UNEJ students in developing health promotion skills through field practice.
The PTP plantation area, the target location for this health promotion program, presents unique challenges. Located far from the city center, plantation workers often have limited access to healthcare services. Therefore, this program is seen as a practical solution to improve the quality of life for the local community through health education and disease prevention.
Dr. dr. Ulfa Elfiah, M.Kes., Dean of FK UNEJ, stated that this collaboration aligns with the faculty’s vision and mission to produce medical graduates with strong promotive, preventive, curative, and rehabilitative skills. “Through this program, students will gain hands-on experience in the field and interact with the community, while also understanding the health challenges in rural areas like the PTP plantation,” she explained.
The meeting also discussed the technical aspects of the program, including the curriculum, the duration of the field practice, and the support facilities that RSU Kaliwates can provide. RSU Kaliwates Jember reaffirmed its readiness to offer adequate health facilities, including access to primary healthcare services in the plantation area.
One key aspect emphasized during the discussion was the holistic approach to health promotion, focusing not only on disease prevention but also on improving overall well-being. FK UNEJ students are expected to design creative and innovative programs, such as health campaigns promoting healthy lifestyles, better sanitation, and infectious disease prevention among the plantation community.
With this collaboration, FK UNEJ and RSU Kaliwates Jember aim to make a meaningful contribution toward a healthier and more empowered society. The partnership also seeks to produce medical graduates who are ready to serve and contribute in various regions, including remote areas like the PTP plantations.
