Agromedicine – The Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Jember (FK UNEJ) successfully held its first seminar series as part of the 25th Dies Natalis celebration on Monday, February 24, 2025. The seminar carried the theme “Acute Abdominal Diseases and Abdominal Emergencies from a Digestive Surgery Perspective” and took place at the FK UNEJ Auditorium. This event was part of a series of academic activities aimed at enhancing the knowledge and skills of students and medical professionals in managing digestive surgical emergencies.
The seminar was officially opened by the Dean of FK UNEJ, Dr. dr. Ulfa Elfiah, M.Kes., Sp.BP-RE., Subsp.L.B.L.(K). In her remarks, she emphasized that the seminar serves as an important platform for the academic community to continuously update their medical knowledge, particularly in the field of digestive surgery. She also highlighted the importance of alumni involvement in sharing knowledge and experiences with students and healthcare professionals.
The seminar featured dr. Adam Mahendra, Sp.B-KBD, a digestive surgeon and an alumnus of FK UNEJ, class of 2008. In his presentation, dr. Adam discussed various cases of acute abdominal diseases and their management. He also highlighted common challenges in handling digestive surgical emergencies, emphasizing the importance of early detection and appropriate treatment to improve patient safety outcomes. The session was moderated by dr. Laksmi Indreswari, Sp.B., who created an engaging and interactive atmosphere, encouraging active participation from the audience during the discussion.
This first seminar series consisted of two main sessions. The first session included a lecture and discussion, where participants had the opportunity to ask questions and directly engage with the speaker regarding common abdominal emergency cases encountered in clinical practice. The second session continued with a workshop designed to provide hands-on experience in managing abdominal emergencies. The workshop covered basic skills in diagnosis and emergency procedures in digestive surgery, allowing participants to enhance their practical competencies.

The high level of enthusiasm was evident from the large number of attendees, including FK UNEJ students, junior doctors, and healthcare practitioners from various institutions. This reflects the relevance of the topic to current medical practice. The Dean of FK UNEJ expressed hope that this seminar series would become a sustainable program that contributes significantly to the advancement of medical knowledge. By presenting competent speakers and practical materials, FK UNEJ aims to better prepare its students for challenges in the medical field.
As part of the 25th Dies Natalis celebration, FK UNEJ remains committed to organizing innovative and impactful academic activities. This first seminar series marks an important step toward fostering a more dynamic and collaborative academic environment within FK UNEJ.Following the success of this inaugural seminar, FK UNEJ plans to continue the series with broader and more in-depth themes, contributing to the advancement of medical science and the improvement of healthcare quality in Indonesia.
